Pathways To Healing: Education Series

Facilitating Support Groups:
Using Writing, Storytelling, & Literary Prompts

Presented by Ted Bowman

**PROGRAMMING UPDATE** Due to inclement weather, Saturday, April 14th's training has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 12th, 2018.

9:30 AM - 4:00 PM

Storytelling is at the heart of most support groups. A person with cancer shares her story of hearing the news from her oncologist; a parent offers his account of caring for a child with special needs; or a member asks for stories of how to ask for help from others. These typical examples can be enriched through the use of writing, literary resources, and individual and “group” stories as key tools of the facilitator.

In this experiential workshop, participants will be presented with a variety of perspectives and tools for the use of writing and use of literary resources (memoir, fiction, lyrics, poetry) in their facilitation practices. Methods will be demonstrated, practiced, debriefed and discussed. Further, attention will be given to choosing materials and the merits and limitations of literary prompts.

If you have any questions about workshop content, please contact Ted Bowman at tedbowman71@gmail.com.

Fee for the training: $95.00

Space is limited.  Register online at: https://tinyurl.com/bowman414

Ted Bowman has been facilitating groups for over 40 years. He is also a collector and practitioner of using literary prompts in the groups he facilitates. Strengthening the Bond:
A Body/Mind Workshop for Participants and their Caregivers

Facilitated by Amy Samson-Burke / Mind Body Solutions

Saturday, April 28, 2018

10:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Living with illness or pain presents unique challenges – both for those experiencing illness and for their caregivers. Learning simple mind-body practices together creates opportunity for connection, relief, and healing during this time of uncertainty. Join Amy Samson-Burke of Mind Body Solutions for an interactive session for participants and their caregivers. Based on the principles of yoga, we’ll move a little, laugh a little, and explore how the sensations of grounding, balance, expansion and rhythm feel. Discover how these simple kinesthetic experiences can help you learn to live a little better in your body. No yoga experience necessary. This class is appropriate for people of all abilities.

Please call Pathways (612-822-9061) to register both you and your caregiver. A caregiver can be a spouse, partner, child, sibling, friend or other caring individual. Registration on a first-come first-serve basis.

Mind Body Solutions is a nonprofit organization with a mission to transform trauma, loss, and disability into hope and potential by awakening the connection between mind and body. Giving Stocks

Thank you for your interest in supporting Pathways through a gift of stock. By making a gift of appreciated stock, you are able to make a charitable gift to Pathways and bypass capital gains taxes. To make gifts of appreciated assets, you must have owned them for at least one year and a day. Such gifts are deductible up to 30% of adjusted gross income in the year of the gift. Any unused deduction amounts may be deducted over as many as five subsequent tax years. Please note that it is usually to your advantage to donate appreciated stock rather than selling it and donating the proceeds. Please check with your financial advisor for more information.

Publicly Traded Stock

Appreciated stock that has been held longer than one year should be transferred directly to Pathways. Your deductible gift amount will be the average of the high and the low value of the stock on the date when you made the transfer, times the number of shares transferred. When you transfer appreciated stock directly to Pathways, you do not incur capital gains.

If you wish to make a gift of appreciated stock, please call your broker and ask them to transfer your stock to the Pathways account. Please contact Tim Thorpe at (612) 822-9061 for account information.

Closely Held Stock

Please contact Tim Thorpe at (612) 822-9061 for more information.

Consider Making a Charitable Bequest

A bequest to Pathways in your will is a creative way to make a thoughtful gift. A bequest is a distribution from your estate that may be made through a gift of cash, marketable securities, closely held stock, or real estate.  You may be able to significantly reduce your taxable estate when you make a charitable bequest because tax laws grant an unlimited estate tax deduction.

June Special Offering

Finding Compassionate Responses to Difficult Losses: Substance Abuse, Overdose and/or Suicide

Presented by Ted Bowman

Tuesday, June 19, 2018

6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Some losses are clear; others are ambiguous. Whatever the loss, grief occurs for all involved. In this experiential session, participants that are facing losses resulting from substance abuse, overdose and/or suicide will gather and be led in exploring and finding compassionate responses. These compassionate responses will include care for self, for those using substances, and for one’s friends and family.

The emphasis here will be on compassionate responses, not on information about addictions, nor on advocacy, nor on a particular point of view. Rather, the time will be devoted to compassionate responses…which may include boundaries, accountability, and deep caring.
