Howard Bell 's Recap of “Dance in the Dark”

The highly successful, sold-out, inspirational and moving Linda Francis Cartee Event was held on October 25, 2007 at the Illusion Theater. “Dance in the Dark, exploring perceptions around death” was produced by Pathways and funded by the Cartee Fund at Pathways. One attendee had this to say about it: “It was fantastic!!! I was mesmerized.”

From my perspective, it was a “precious gem” from the diamond mine that is Pathways.

Some other words to describe the evening are energizing, exhilarating, emotional, entertaining and exciting. One goal of Pathways since its inception has been to “lighten-up” the darkness that surrounds death in our culture. I believe we accomplished that objective more completely than ever before.

Gratitude to photographer, Alec Soth, for sharing both his beautiful photos and his impactful story about the experience of shared living and dying with his mother-in-law, Linda Francis Cartee; to memoirist, Patricia Hampl, and accompanist, Dan Chouinard, for inspirational readings, memories and music; to storyteller, Kevin Kling, for his highly entertaining and enlightening wit and wisdom; and to The Stuart Pimsler Dance and Theater Company – both the company dancers and the Pathways' dancers - for the meaningful, memorable and heart-felt performance of “Undercovers”. Thanks to everyone who helped make this event possible including planning committee members, volunteers, and many others including the ticket purchasers. The appreciative audience members were the final required component – Thank You to All.

Finally, we celebrate that the evening was recorded and “kept alive” in a Twin Cities Public Television Minnesota Channel and Pathways co-produced hour-long television show. The show aired for the first time on Channel 17 on January 20, 2008 and will be show again on Saturday April 19th, 8:30 p.m. Watch your TV listing for future showings throughout the year!
